There is a unanimity in the Arab world for a no-fly zone on the arab Norh Afriican state. But still the U.N. is reluctant to act .The attitude of the superpowers ca be understandable at first as they may have taken into consideration the attitude of the peoples in the region who are sensitive towards foreign intervention. But now the Arab League of which Libya is a full member made it cristal clear that it is for a no fly zone. The security council is after all responsible for world peace and it has to act immediately and effectively.
The government in Libya has failed to protect the citizens and it doesn’t seem that it intends to .
It’s not really wise to wait and see what happens . superpowers need to be clear and firm on the questions of democracy and liberty in the region. Are they really ready to support the peoples in their bid for democracy and liberty . It’s not enough to say” violence must stop” or this or that dictator “must go”while waiting what’s happening on the ground. We’ll just see thousands of civilians falling every day.
false claims have been made by dictators in the region without exception because they know they are left in power simply to fight terrorism. Mubarak of Egypt went as far as bombing a church to prove this terrorism which is only in his mind. Ben Ali of Tunisia also spoke about terrorism at the beginning of the revolution, again it was fiction. Ben Laden has nothing to do with revolts swepping the region. And nobody believes Ben Laden is behind the uprisings in the region as the colonel says.
Besides, the outcome of the fight in libya will be detrimental to the settlement in the region bearing in mind two revolutions on the borders . And The move of the U.N. will either push for more more democracy and free modern societies in the region or halt it. Therefore it’s high time to fight terrorism by helping the peoples in the region to have democratic governments rather than nurture it by doing nothing or doing less.
